Cebu Doctors Show Disrespect to Gay Patient

17 04 2008

When Terri Hatcher said that infamous line in “Desperate Housewives”, which maligned the medical practitioners in the Philippines, most of our countrymen went gung-ho in protest.

But you know, she may have a point.

Cebu gay cries foul on hospital’s boo-boo
from Sun.Star Cebu

A 39-year-old homosexual is planning to sue a medical team after he saw in a cellular phone of a friend last Friday a circulated video footage of the operation to extract a perfume canister stuck in his anus during a sexual act.

The operation on the man, who only wants to be identified as “Jan-Jan,” was done at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) last Jan. 3 yet, but the video footage has been circulating through cell phones since then and was even uploaded in the video-sharing web site, YouTube. (The clip is probably removed by now — Empress Maruja)

“I trusted them. And yet they ridiculed me behind my back…Was that something a professional would do? I can’t even walk the streets without being laughed at by neighbors. I want my ordeal to end. And I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Jan-Jan told Sun.Star Cebu in Cebuano.

The video that runs for two minutes and 28 seconds shows an operating team of more than 10 people laughing, with someone shouting instructions while the operation was going on.

It captures individuals with mobile phones and cameras taking footage of the operation. A brief panning motion shows some of the faces of the people involved in the procedure. (There were actually A LOT of cameras in the operating room, not just those three. — Empress Maruja)

Loud cheering and shouting can be heard as the canister that someone describes as a “baby” is slowly pulled out of the anus. One of the staff even opens the perfume and sprays it around.

All the time, the patient whose face is not visible in the video, is unconscious.

**********

This is a violation in many levels:

* The doctor-patient confidentiality ethic was not followed.
* There were more than enough people in the operating room (most of them were only there to record the procedure on their cellphones).
* The loud, childish jeers from the crowd after the spray can was removed was sickening. A clear disrespect for the patient.
* And the doctor had the gall of telling this to the patient, as stated in that same report…
“On Jan. 5, when Jan-Jan was scheduled to be released, his doctor approached him and asked if he wanted to earn money by uploading the video taken during his operation on YouTube. Ashamed with what had happened, he refused.”

The Filipino society is known (or at least that’s what I know) for being very tolerant about gays. Yet, honestly, we’re still being laughed at and continued to be ridiculed. Would you agree with me? Eto lang is one big Mt. Everest evidence.

Many times when I am home in Manila, I always hear these side comments like “Eh, bakla naman yan eh!” as if to mean something demeaning or something. True, this is not a general perception, yet there still a lot of work for gays in the Philippines to counter such ridiculous bad perception of gays.

Irrelevant of what the gay guy did with the canister, which I believe is what amused the people at the operating room, they should have conducted themselves according to their professional code of conduct. Thing is, alam ba nila yon? Where is the leader of the group? Wala ba sya sa room? How come he did not even stop these people?

Who’s their role model? Isaiah “Dr. Burke” Washington (ex-Grey’s Anatomy)???

These idiots are a disgrace to the medical profession…the patient should sue!!!!

We should do something about this!

Attention all Filipino Professionals in the Medical Field, papayag ba kayong kahilera n’yo ang mga taong ‘to? F__k!

bilang isang nurse (by profession lang, not by practice), i am frustrated by this show of non-professionalism and lack of ethics and respect by these so-called healthcare professionals. this is why i think importante na maipasa ang law on medical malpractice because under the existing laws, konti lang ang options ni jan-jan of seeking justice for this horrible act.

Oh dear! This is just too much! What the hell were they thinking?
Para silang walang pinag-aralan!

You’re right, Empress. Nag-violate ang mga doctors dito! My God! Nakakahiya sila!

the medical practitioners involved here should ponder their disgusting behavior. lahat ng tao may karapatan sa privacy, lahat ng tao dapat respetohin — kahit ano pa man sya.

napanood ko nga sa balita. Ayos ah… ginawang labrat ampf.

I’m back….

I agree, coldbrewedcoffee.

And knowing how powerful bloggers are, we can do something about it…

at last, a blog that hit the nail on the head regarding this sorry incident. no misplaced anger, no hypocrisy and no judgmental tone. The issue’s not the deodorant spray and how it got inside the victim’s body, THE ISSUE IS PATIENTS RIGHTS and HOW IT WAS VIOLATED in this case. mabuhay ka, empress maruja! kudos to your intelligent readers too!

I am a nurse but never would I give this disrespect to my patient. Operating rooms are sanitized and doors should be closed but with all those people there I think all the bacteria went in with them as well. All of those people in that room license in practicing medicine should be taken. They have no right to work as a medical practitioner with an attitude like that. The patient has the right to have their privacy and operating rooms are for private operation only. They are so so damn Stupid. They are degrading the medical profession here in the Philippines. Take away their license they shouldn’t be practicing medicine and should not be allowed to work in a hospital at all. I am so mad at how they treated this patient. Gay or not they have the right to privacy… PRIVACY..Pkisaksak sa utak ng mga taong nandyan sa video… wala kayong pinagaralan..mga bobo..sayang lang ginastos ng parents nyo to get you to where you are to act this way. (P.S. I’m not gay pero I respect other people’s right to privacy)

they’re only option is to have their licenses revoked or public apology …dapat isa isa silang magsorry on national tv. let’s all look at the their faces and remember them very well. how can they sleep at night kaya? knowing they’ve done this to someone. tsk tsk tsk.

That is so messed up in so many levels. I wish the legal system in the Philippines actually worked because if it does for this man, those medical “professionals” will have their licenses revoked. It’s unprofessional to laugh at a patient, it’s unprofessional to have your cellphones out during an operation, it’s unprofessional to videotape a footage of an operation without the prior permission of the patient and, lastly, it’s unprofessional to let that video circulate.

Grrr.. that makes me so mad.

Im from cebu and Im so disgusted and so ashame on what they did. They not only making dirt on Cebu’s image but also the entire medical group of the Philippines. I have aunts and uncles who are medical practitioners and they are so much saddened with the scandal. There must be something to be done and it must be done in due process. How unethical and disrespectful these doctors and nurses are! Their licenses must be revoked! No mercy for them. They did not even pity and give respect to the patient’s reputation. All Human kind must be respected regardless of status in life. DISGUSTING PEOPLE! to think they are professionals (“doctors” and “nurses” daw).

i have a question: who put the sprayer inside his anus? should he/she be also liable for what happened?

can’t he not pull the canister out of his anus by himself?

i’m a cebuano and i am ashamed of what they did to the patient. i hope this won’t happen again. i also hope the doctors and nurses involved will lose their licenses. : 0

those horrible doctors and nurses cannot call themselves as “PROFESSIONAL”.

Gay man o hindi; aksidente man o sadya; walang taong dapat tratuhin ng ganito. Pang-aalipusta ito sa karapatang pang-tao. At kawalan ng modo! (galit ako!)
Matalino yang mga doctors at nurses na involved dito, i’m sure. Kaso kulang sa character. Sayang. I am sure nagsisisi sila ngayon sa katangahan nila (yes katangahan yun, kuhanan mo ba naman ng video, tapos i-pan mo pa ang kamera sa mga spectators sa OR, o e di bisto kayo ngayon). But as they say, it takes so little to lose everything you worked for. In this case, baka mga lisensya nyo.

I am currently here in Cebu and I have featured this unethical med issue in Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) at the heat of the controversy. It so inhuman na talaga. I’m hoping those doctors’ and nurses’ professional licenses will be revoked or suspended. I’m so pissed off of this issue. Nakakahiya sila! They should at least show human dignity.

According to Danilo, his trauma started on December 31 last year when he met a man in the streets who offered to have sex with him for P100.

Danilo, who said he was drunk, brought the man home and had sexual intercourse with him.

But he recalled bruising the man’s ego by criticizing the size of his sex organ.

Apparently challenged, the man told Danilo to have sex with him again, but this time using the canned body spray he found inside Danilo’s room.

“Ingon ko di ko, unya nakabati na lang ko nga sakit (I said no, but later I felt something painful),” he said.

Danilo said he then fell asleep.

This is just showing that BEING TRULY HUMAN is not achieved by finishing college, doctoral or masteral degrees, nor by studying laws, nor by going to church every Sundays …

It is about having deep and immutable respect for the other human being, whoever and whatever they may be.

Now these nurses and doctors in Cebu – are like wild animals devoid of their humanity, even worse than the man who pushed in the canister!

There is really terribly SICK in the morality of the Filipinos and the Philippines, being a Christian Catholic country in Asia.

“There is really terribly SICK in the morality of the Filipinos and the Philippines, being a Christian Catholic country in Asia. ” – jase… naks talagang Christian Catholic… hehehe… agree mali gawa ng doc and nurses… BUT… if we dig deeper
may nagawa sana yung bakla na yan… if ONLY sinunod lang nya yung sa Bible na… male and female… edi sana di xa nangyari sa kanya yan…kaya para sa akin… if your in the 3rd sex… di maiiwasan na lokohin ka ng ibang tao… at kung pumasok ka sa 3rd sex… expect the worst… from people around you… dahil kakaunti lang ang makakatanggap sayo… as in buong-buo… di na dapat ako magcomment eh… kaso nabasa ko yung Christian Catholic kaya ayun napa reply ako… the bottom line… both parties are at fault… period

people expect these doctors to be one of those educated people on earth… but what they did is something only bastards would do. authorities should definitely do something about this. Tanggalan ng lisensya lahat ng kasali diyan! Everyone is entitled to privacy and respect whether you’re gay or not.

let us not forget how the catholic church officially condemns the patient. rather than condemning the breach of confidentiality. this is the kind of values that is being taught to the children of this country. this is the same principle as blaming the rape victim., when people blames the woman (or man) rather than the rapist.
